What is Live Finance?

Published

The quick answer

Live Finance means finance runs continuously with the business rather than reconstructing financial reality after the fact. The batch paradigm of close, reconcile, report and repeat is what Live Finance replaces. Aderis is the Live Finance Platform: a finance system of record that runs accounting autonomously on an AI-native core, keeps every number traceable to source and orchestrates the full finance cycle across entities, ledgers and currencies in real time.

Definition

Live Finance is an operating model for the finance function in which accounting work is executed as business events occur, so the financial picture is current at any point in the period rather than only after a close. The term describes a state of the finance function, not a feature: the books are maintained continuously, and reporting reads from a record that is already up to date.

Three conditions separate Live Finance from a faster version of the traditional model. First, the work itself (capture, coding, reconciliation, approvals, payment runs, dunning) is executed autonomously by AI agents within defined controls, instead of being queued for people at period-end. Second, every number remains traceable to its source: the document, the bank transaction, the contract, and the rule or decision that produced the entry. Third, the platform that executes the work is the finance system of record itself, not a layer above an existing accounting system. The third condition carries the other two. A layer above the record can propose an entry, but it cannot own the number, and it cannot guarantee that a figure in a report traces back to its source without a break.

The batch paradigm, and why it is a constraint rather than a fact of nature

Most finance systems in use today were designed before AI was viable in the ledger. They store transactions and produce reports, but the work between the two, which is coding, matching, reconciling, accruing and eliminating, is done by people, and people batch work. The result is a rhythm the whole organisation has learnt to live with: a month of activity, then a close, then reports that describe a period that has already ended. Reconciliation load, intercompany effort, parallel statutory, tax, management and group views, and currency handling all compress into the same few days. Visibility arrives only after the close.

This rhythm is not an accounting requirement. Accounting standards define how transactions are recognised and presented; they do not require that recognition happens weeks after the event. The batch paradigm is an artefact of tooling that could not do the work continuously. Once the tooling can, the constraint falls away, and with it the assumption that the finance function must grow in step with the business to keep up.

What Live Finance requires

An AI-native core. AI has to sit inside the posting work, not beside it. In practice this means agents capture documents, code transactions, match bank movements and prepare entries as part of the platform's own process, within controls that define what is executed autonomously and what waits for approval. A chat window on top of an unchanged ledger does not meet this condition.

Continuous processing. Bank feeds, capture, coding and reconciliation run as events arrive. The close stops being a month-end event and becomes a continuous state. Continuous Close is the name of this process in Aderis.

Every number traceable to source. Traceability is a product property, not a marketing adjective. A figure in a management report has to link back to the entries, the documents and the rules behind it without leaving the platform. This is what makes autonomous execution acceptable to a CFO and defensible to an auditor.

Orchestration across entities, ledgers and currencies. A group with several entities, several currencies and parallel statutory, tax, management and group ledgers needs one platform that holds all of them. If consolidation happens somewhere else, the batch returns at group level, however current the individual entities are.

Open by design. The platform exchanges data with banks, operational systems and AI assistants through documented interfaces, so Live Finance extends to the systems around it rather than stopping at the edge of the ledger.

What changes for the CFO and the CEO

For the CFO, Live Finance changes the relationship between automation and control. In the batch model, more automation usually means less visibility into how a number came about. On an AI-native core with traceability to source, every entry is explainable, so control improves as manual work falls. Numbers are current when decisions are made rather than weeks later, audit questions can be answered from the record itself, and the finance function scales more slowly than headcount and revenue.

For the CEO, the value is tempo and confidence. Current financial reality is available at any point, and the next entity, market or currency does not slow expansion, because the platform already runs the structure. Finance runs with the business, not behind it.

How Aderis implements Live Finance

Aderis is built as a Live Finance Platform from day one, with AI in the core rather than added on. The platform has three layers. The Platform Engine provides AI agents, automation, multi-entity, multi-ledger and multi-currency handling, controls and compliance, integrations and APIs, and hosting and data residency in Switzerland and the EU. Core Finance runs finance day to day: Order to Cash, Purchase to Pay, Record to Report and Treasury, with a dedicated agent that captures, codes, reconciles, prepares payment runs and chases what is due. Statutory, tax, management and group ledgers run in parallel from a single source of postings. Advanced extends the platform with consolidation, workforce, FP&A and BI reporting.

Aderis replaces the existing finance or accounting system of record; it is not an add-on to one. It is built in and for Switzerland and Europe by Aderis AG, a Swiss technology company based in Kilchberg.

Who Live Finance is for

Live Finance matters most where complexity has outgrown periodic tooling: growing mid-market companies with multi-entity, multi-currency or multi-country structures, typically between 50 and 500 employees with a finance team of around three to fifteen people. The usual trigger is growth, rising complexity or pressure to put AI to work in finance while keeping control. Commerce, manufacturing, MedTech and complex service businesses see the pattern early. Aderis is not built for large-corporate ERP programmes and does not position itself toward them.

How to recognise Live Finance

Four questions separate Live Finance from a faster close and from AI features on an existing system. Does the platform own the record, or does it sit above another system's ledger? Is accounting work executed as events occur, or compressed into period-end? Can any number in a report be traced to its source without leaving the platform? Are entities, ledgers and currencies handled on one platform, or reassembled elsewhere for consolidation? A product that answers all four in the first sense runs Live Finance. One that does not belongs to a different category, whatever it says about AI.

Frequently asked questions

Is Live Finance the same as Continuous Close?

No. Continuous Close is one process within Live Finance: the part that keeps the books close-ready throughout the period instead of at month-end. Live Finance is the wider operating model, which also covers autonomous execution of the accounting routine, traceability to source and orchestration across entities, ledgers and currencies.

Is Aderis accounting software?

Aderis is the Live Finance Platform, a finance system of record. Accounting is executed autonomously at its core, but the platform orchestrates the full finance cycle, from capture and approvals to payment runs, dunning, consolidation and reporting, across entities, ledgers and currencies.

Does Live Finance mean no human review?

No. AI agents execute the routine; controls, approvals and roles define where people decide. The difference from the batch model is that review happens on current, traceable entries rather than on a backlog at period-end.

Does moving to Live Finance require replacing the existing system?

Yes. Live Finance requires the platform to be the system of record, so Aderis replaces the existing finance or accounting system rather than connecting to it as a layer. Aderis integrates with the systems around finance, such as banks and operational applications.

Is Live Finance only relevant for large companies?

No. It is most relevant for growing mid-market companies whose structure (several entities, currencies or countries) has outgrown single-entity, periodic tooling. Large-corporate ERP programmes are outside the scope of Aderis.

Where is Aderis built, and who is behind it?

Aderis is built by Aderis AG, a Swiss technology company headquartered in Kilchberg, built in and for Switzerland and Europe.
